You can carry a lot more luggage if you learn to pack it well. It can even allow you to have smaller bags or suitcases as you won’t need as much space.

Bulky items such as shoes can be used as storage containers to save space where you can pack smaller items, particularly soft items such as socks and underwear inside them.

The tidier you are at packing your clothes the more room you will have. It will also tend to keep your clothes in better condition with less creases and wrinkles.

Pack your biggest items first, such as bulky jackets and then pack in the smaller items around them to fill up the space.

A lot of clothing and items such as towels can take up less room if they are rolled rather than folded. It depends on the shape of the item and the type of materials they are made from but you should test to see whether your clothing and accessories might work well with this method of packing. Rolling clothes is also often a good way to stop them from getting creased.

If you have any hard boxes or bags such as camera or laptop bags you should consider using any available space for packing smaller items.

Make use of additional external compartments on your travel bags to store items as you will find that you will have more room by doing this rather than trying to get everything in the one main compartment.

It will also place less strain on the zips and clips on your bags if you pack in this manner and the last think you want to happen to your bags while away is for the zips to break thereby stopping you from securing your possessions.

Don’t leave for holiday with every inch of space fully utilized if you intend to do any shopping while away or you might have a nightmare trying to pack for your return trip.

Motion sickness can affect people who have never experienced it before.

Tiredness is one of the triggers for motion sickness with many people suffering more when they have had a lack of sleep.

When traveling, and in particular when the travel plans are hectic, it is often hard to get suitable sleep.
With the additional tiredness, comes an increase in the incidence of motion sickness.

This can affect people in all modes of transport from air travel to sea travel, road travel and even via rail.
Even if you haven’t been affected by this in the past it is relatively inexpensive to buy motion sickness pills and they certainly don’t take up very much space in your luggage do they?

Weather conditions can change quickly in many areas of the world and an expected smooth flight, or sailing, can quickly turn into a bumpy experience increasing the chance of feeling unwell.

Motion sickness will certainly put a dampener on the enjoyment you will have in your travels and the ability to control it with a suitable pill is a worthwhile investment to have in your travel pack at all times.

Even the foods that you eat have a bearing on whether you will feel unwell or not and whilst on holiday in uncommon destinations you are likely to want to try some of the local cuisine. You won’t know until it is too late whether it is agreeable with you.

Not all pills are suitable for everyone so, as with all your other planning, you might need to try them before you leave on your holiday to see whether the pill in itself could make you feel unwell and if so, change to another brand.

There are other alternatives besides pills such as wrist bands that apply pressure to specific points and these have proven to be very effective in reducing motion sickness.

It is common for travelers to ‘let their guard down’ when on vacation in the misguided assumption that nothing will happen to them.

You should always take steps to ensure that your personal safety is paramount at all times even when traveling in countries where you would assume safety wouldn’t need to be a consideration.

Safety is usually better when traveling in groups or with another person but there are often times even when you aren’t traveling alone where you will want to do something without other people.

If you do decide to go off on your own make sure the other people in your group know where you are going and when you intend to return.

If there are any changes of plans, ensure that other people are aware of the changes and check to see that they were concentrate on your instructions when you were talking to them.

If you are traveling alone there are so many easily assessable forms of communication with mobile phones, internet and so on that it is still wise to keep others informed, even if they are back home in another country, so they can contact the appropriate authorities if they don’t hear from you at predetermined times.

Anything can happen at any time, and often when least expected, so it is better to remain prepared by taking simple steps along the way.

Let people know where you are and where you intend to be at a particular time. Before leaving home, you should give someone you trust a list of the places where you will be staying and the contact information of those places should they need to contact you.

It takes very little time and effort to keep people informed and can save everyone a lot of worry and concern if things do happen to go wrong.

Be sure of all your arrival and departure times and double check if there are any possibilities for misunderstandings.

In foreign countries it is very easy to misunderstand instructions where people talk with a heavy accent and even more difficult when you don’t understand the language at all.

You could be charged additional fees for vacating your accommodation after the correct checkout time.

And while on the subject of checkout times, you should also consider paying a small additional fee for the hotel to store your luggage until a later hour so you can continue to enjoy your holiday on the day of departure.

This is particularly useful if there is a big period of time between having to vacate your room and the time that you will be boarding your flight to your next destination or home.

You won’t want to be lugging your baggage around with you for hours, or leaving it in the trunk of your car while you are sightseeing, when the hotel might only charge you a minimal fee for secure storage for a few hours.

If you are traveling outside of the peak season and there aren’t other people waiting for your room you can often get another half day accommodation for a small fee at many places and this can be very convenient allowing you to continue to enjoy your holiday to the last minute and still have the benefits of the facilities at the hotel with your own room and bathroom.

Hotel owners will be more willing to provide such services if they think you will be coming back at some time in the future so it is always a good idea to let them think this is so.

You should also make sure that you are ready well in advance of your flight departures as a missed flight will cost you additional fees including more accommodation, and in particular in the peak season, last minute accommodation could require that you pay a premium.

Later flights might also mean you lose any discount rates that have already been arranged.

While on holiday, time costs money so try to be on time all the time where possible and if not make arrangements as soon as possible to save money.

Sometimes things are not quite as you would have expected and these are the times that you need to make quick decisions and take action.

An example of this will be where you have booked to stay at a particular place for the term of your holiday and the conditions don’t live up to expectations.

You should immediately see if there are any alternative arrangements that you can make to improve the situation. Maybe you can get a cheap upgrade to better rooms or you might even need to cancel your booking and move to a better place where you will be happier.

Even if this involves additional expense it might be better to accept that your budget will need to be changed to be able to get the benefits of traveling to that region in the first place.

Don’t delay making these decisions because any time lost should be regarded as a holiday expense as every day that you are paying for services you aren’t happy with, is money wasted.

The further your travel has taken you, the more important it is to make these decisions fast because it might be that you will never get the opportunity to return to that particular region again.

Having allowed a buffer in your budget will help you to make the decision to move on, so take that into consideration when you start your initial planning.

Even the best holiday planning can result in less than perfect results because often we have to rely on the opinions of others, however you have the ability to change the situation if need be.

Most seasoned travelers constantly adapt to the circumstances that are presented to them and often the changes they make result in a better experience than they would have planned for initially.

You can’t always trust people you meet in your travels, as you never know what motives they might have by giving you information.

Suggestions on what to do and where to go can be expensive when talking with locals and you can avoid being taken advantage of if you have sufficient information beforehand to compare with what you are hearing from the people at the places you are visiting.

This is not to say that you shouldn’t ask for advice from the locals but you should also have some knowledge to compare with what you are hearing.

Places of accommodation will often give you good advice but then again they will often be working with local businesses and recommend those who will help one another even where their price might not be the best if they can get some of benefit for their own business at your expense.

There are unscrupulous people in all places throughout the world waiting to exploit tourists and take advantage of their lack of knowledge by overpricing goods and services.

The more familiar you can become with the customs of the people and the way they operate the better prepared you will be to deal with them and in doing so save yourself a considerable amount of money.

Not only will you be able to save money but it will also help you to stay safe as it is common for people on holiday to ‘let their guard down’ and that is when they are more susceptible to danger.

Good planning prior to departure is your key to successfully having a great holiday where you will get the maximum benefits for the least expense.

Mistakes cost money and you will want to make as little of them as possible.

Even the timing of your holiday should be planned according to what is happening at the place you intend to visit as special events can result in surcharges being placed on accommodation to account for the extra demand and the lack of supply.

Unless you specifically want to take in such events you should try to avoid them to save money.

With the technological advances that have taken place in recent years for digital cameras and video cameras it is so much more affordable to keep your memories of your holidays than it was only a few years ago.

The price of digital equipment has dropped considerably and the fact that you no longer have to pay for the processing of films means you can click away at anything and everything that you think will be of interest.

Digital cameras last for years and even if you don’t have enough funds to buy new equipment there are some exceptional deals on auction sites such as eBay where you can get a good camera for a few dollars.
Once you have the equipment there are no other expenses involved.

You will need to decide how many pictures you are likely to take and make sure that your camera has enough storage or else you can get an account with the many different photo sharing services on the internet and download your photos freeing up space in your camera. If you have access to the Internet these services can be very convenient to use.

You will need to ensure that your batteries are fully charged at all times and to do this you will have to be sure that you have the correct plug to charge your camera batteries as some countries have different electrical sockets and also different voltage settings.

Another thing that you need to consider is how you intend to carry your cameras around when you are sightseeing. There are many camera bags to choose from and the ones that are generally most suitable for travelers are those that are attached to a belt that you can wear comfortably around your waist.

The smaller size of the modern cameras and videos makes them easier to carry.

It is probably wise to take additional batteries and extra storage cards as they take up very little room and to buy them when overseas might be more expensive than buying them at home.

Many people don’t even consider whether they are fit enough for the type of travel plans they have in mind.

If the places you intend to see involve a lot of walking, have you considered whether you will be fit and able to do what you propose to do?

If not, then a simple fitness program will make your holiday a lot more comfortable and enjoyable.

And while on the subject of walking, do you have suitable footwear that you will feel comfortable wearing for hours every day?
It is unwise to buy new shoes before leaving on holiday and expect to break them in while you are away.

Maybe you are going on a skiing holiday and have yet to get your fitness levels up to a suitable standard because it is outside of your usual skiing time at home.

You also need to consider how activities will affect your muscles and aches and pains.
This can have a detrimental affect on the fun you wish to experience on holiday and should be taken into consideration with some form of preparation before your departure.

Failing that, you should check to see whether you will be able to get a massage to reduce any muscle fatigue.

Often you will not decide on what you want to do until you get to your destination and to realize that you can’t participate in certain activities simply because you are somewhat unfit would be a shame don’t you think?

Even a small increase in physical fitness can have a profound affect on the fun you can experience while on holiday.

It might be something as simple as reducing your level of fatigue while walking through shopping centers all day or allowing you to do more snorkeling because you won’t get as tired swimming.

The sooner you prepare for your holiday the easier it will be to get fit in time.

You certainly don’t want to get any infections while away on holiday so you will need to do a little research to find out what steps you need to take to protect yourself.

Find out which diseases are prevalent in the regions that you will be traveling in.

Often there are diseases in regions that have very little effect on the locals because they have built up their immunity to them over time whereas travelers who have no immunity to them can get quite sick very quickly.

If vaccination is necessary for safe travel to the places you intend to visit then make sure that you get immunized at the correct times before your departure as some vaccinations need a specific number of days in your system to be at their most effective.

If you have been vaccinated in the past then it might still be necessary for you to get a booster shot to make sure that you are safe.

Don’t leave this to the last minute as the vaccination might not be effective in the initial stages and you might get infected before it has the chance to be of any use.

If you do find you have left getting vaccinated to the last minute then it is still wise to proceed anyway as it is better to get it done late rather than not at all.
At least there might be some chance it will have an effect on reducing your susceptibility to contracting a disease.

With the increase in travel worldwide there has also been an increase in the spread of infectious diseases and countries that would not have been a concern a few years ago will now require some form of vaccination.

Do your research to find out what is needed and also talk to your medical practitioner to see what the latest requirements are relating to these matters.

It might even be necessary to take some medical supplies when traveling to certain regions and once again your medical practitioner will be able to help you make the correct decisions.

If you know you are not the type of person who likes rugged conditions with a lack of amenities then maybe you should plan your holiday to suit your personality rather than putting up with conditions that won’t allow you to maximize the benefits of your travels.

By doing your homework first and talking to experienced travelers and travel agents you should be able to plan a holiday that will suit your needs.

Even small factors like an inability to feel comfortable with delays can have a detrimental affect on your vacation when traveling to areas where time isn’t a priority with the people you will have to deal with.

Maybe you don’t like a lot of children and the associated noise that they bring. If so you should find out whether the resort where you are staying is family orientated or not.

If you are a person who likes lots of adventure then don’t travel to places where you are likely to get bored by the second day.

Also – you will need to consider how much adventure is available in a region and whether or not you will need to spend a lot of your time traveling from one spot to another to get your fix of excitement.

There might be other places that you can go where you will have more options to do more of what you like without all the associated travel in between.

Talk to people you know and trust to see what their opinions of holiday destinations are like but also consider their personal circumstances.
Why I mention this is because people who are close to you with similar interests might have vastly differing opinions of what makes a good holiday if, for example, they have a family and you are single.

You won’t have any need for child minding services whereas that might be the best service they could hope for on their holiday.
